The front foot of the animal is webbed, and the webbing folds up under the foot when walking to protect it. It is stretched out fully when the animal is in the water, enabling it to swim quickly after its food. The rear foot has some webbing as well, but its long claws remain exposed at all times and can be used for defense. The rear foot also has a sixth claw that does not leave a mark but can deliver poison to an attacker.
